Le 9 Novembre de cette année, vous avez dit à l'assemblée générale :
« Des conditions de météo extrêmes dûes au changement climatique sont devenues la norme... Notre défi demeure clair et urgent: réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre, pour renforcer l'adaptation à... des chocs climatiques encore plus importants... et pour atteindre un accord légal avant 2015... Ceci devrait être une des leçons primordiales tirée de l'ouragan Sandy. »
Le 13 Novembre, vous avez dit à Yale: « La science est claire; nous ne devrions plus perdre plus de temps à débattre. »
Le lendemain, dans l'émission sur internet d'Al Gore « Dirty Weather », vous avez parlé « de tempêtes plus graves, de sécheresses plus dramatiques, de grandes inondations », et avez conclu : « Il y a deux semaines, l'ouragan Sandy a frappé la côte Est des Etats-Unis. Une nation a vu la réalité du changement climatique. Cela va coûter des dizaines de milliards de dollars. Le prix de l'inaction sera encore plus important. Nous devons réduire notre dépendance en émissions de carbone. »
Nous, soussignés, tous qualifiés en matière de climatologie, désirons déclarer que la connaissance scientifique actuelle ne soutient aucunement vos affirmations.
Le bureau britannique du MET a récemment publié des données montrant qu'il n'y a pas eu de réchauffement climatique statistiquement signifiant depuis bientôt 16 ans. Durant cette période, d'après la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) américaine, les concentrations de dioxyde de carbone (CO2) ont augmenté de 9% pour constituer maintenant 0,039% de l'atmosphère. Le réchauffement climatique qui ne s'est pas produit ne peut pas avoir causé les conditions météorologiques extrêmes de ces dernières années. Quand, si et comment un réchauffement atmosphérique va se reproduire est inconnu. La science n'est pas claire. Quelques scientifiques mettent en évidence qu'un refroidissement naturel à court-terme, en liaison avec des influences solaires, est également une possibilité distincte.
Les « plus grands chocs climatiques » que vous avez mentionnés seraient bien pires si le monde se refroidissait plutôt que se réchauffait. Le climat change naturellement en permanence, parfois de manière dramatique. L'hypothèse que nos émisions de CO2 ont causé, ou vont causer, un réchauffement dangereux n'est soutenue par aucune preuve.
L'incidence et la sévérité d'une météo extrême n'a pas augmenté. Il y a très peu d'évidence que des évènements dangereux liés à la météo vont se produire plus fréquemment dans le futur. Le GIEC de l'ONU dit dans son Special Report on Extreme Weather (2012) qu'il y a « une absence de signal d'attribution de changement climatique » dans la tendance des pertes de conditions météorologiques extrêmes. Les fonds octroyés en ce moment pour essayer d'arrêter les conditions extrêmes du temps devraient ainsi être dirigés au renforcement de nos infrastructures afin d'être capables de résister à ces évènements naturels inévitables et à aider les communautés à rebâtir après des catastrophes naturelles comme par exemple la tempête tropicale Sandy.
Il n'y a aucune raison valide pour les décisions de politique restrictive à l'encontre du public proposées par la conférence de l'ONU sur le climat au Qatar. Une analyse rigoureuse et impartiale des données ne soutient en aucun cas les projections futures des prédictions des modèles informatiques pour un réchauffement climatique, modèles qui ont été prouvés exagérer le réchauffement et ses effets.
Le rapport de la NOAA « State of the Climate in 2008 » a établi que 15 ans ou plus sans aucune statistique signifiante de réchauffement indiquerait une divergence entre l'observation et la prédiction. Seize ans sans réchauffement ont donc maintenant prouvé que les modèles informatiques sont faux de par le critère de leurs propres créateurs.
Sur ces considérations, nous demandons que vous vous désistiez d'exploiter la misère de familles de ceux qui ont perdus leur vie ou leur propriété dans la tempête tropicale Sandy en faisant des affirmations qui ne peuvent être soutenues concernant le fait que des influences humaines ont causé cette tempête. Cela n'est pas vrai. Nous vous demandons également de reconnaître que les actions politiques des Nations-Unies, ou des nations signataires de l'UNFCCC, qui visent à réduire les émissions de CO2 n'auront vraisemblablement aucune influence sur le climat futur. Les politiques climatiques se doivent donc de se focaliser plus sur la préparation et l'adaptation à de dangereux évènements climatiques quelque soit leur origine.
